Nostalgia returns

Alright, you Poms, Ockers and Yanks can tune out this one (pun definitely intended). Gather around fellow Godzoners, last night the Goodnight Kiwi returned to TVNZ channels after a long absence - we last saw the little bloke in 1994. In those days 24-hour programming was the height of foreign decadence (you Brits, Aussies and Americans aren't still reading this are you?) The new version will screen at 7.30 to encourage the ankle-biters to head off to bed. I'm guessing they'll modify the original (below) as, let's face it, what twenty-first century Kiwi kid would even recognise a milk bottle?

Wow! That's pretty soothing. Much better than the blaring the good old Stars and Stripes followed by creepy Poltergeist static.

Gavin,

One thing about the pussy cat.

That cat preceded the Kiwi up to the top of the tower.

How did pussy get to the top?

Did he go up in the lift or did he physically climb the tower?

Cheers,

Seamus

As a "fellow Godzoner" -- I remember it well... Was it really 1994 ? Time flies quickly. About the pussy getting to the top, people didn't seem to care, because it was TV fiction, and they were quite tired when it was shown anyway - about midnight if I remember correctly.

I realize that people outside the USA have trouble understanding this; but, at least a third of the folks in America will be deeply insulted if they are referred to as..."Yanks".

But Larry, you have to understand that we outside the 'glorious land' recognise that a certain segment of the American population seems to make a habit of yanking our chains. So, for some at least, the name seems to fit.

Pfffffffff so now we know roughly where Larry's geolocated.

Keep going, Larry, your true self is showing ever more clearly, every time you post.

Yeah! - especially below the Mason/Dixon Line, us Americans had to fight off them Yanks back in th' 1860's. Unfortunately, their carbet bagger brothers came in afterward and bought up ever-thang for back taxes. Damn Yankees.

I was going to say what the first commenter did -- you don't sign off with the NZ national anthem?!

In most of the USA, that seems almost downright unpatriotic.

But in my home town of Kansas City, one of the big TV stations always signed on and off with a recording of Gordon McRae singing "The Lord's Prayer." Now that was nice.

New Zealanders don't tend to wear their patriotism on their sleeve. The idea of kids saluting the flag, for example, seems downright strange in this part of the world. Mind you, nothing rouses the blood quite like a haka before an international rugby game. ;-)

Wicked, Degenerate Readers,

Pure, sweet, innocent, not-at-fault types like myself kind of liked it a little bit too.
