An unexpected vocation

It's a tragic story about a good man, tragically slain. Once you fight your way past the incongruity of it all, you'll appreciate that the report - covering a major moment of reflection in Jamaica - depicts a good man who brought great credit to his community of faith, the Worldwide Church of God. I'm sure most readers here would want to echo the condolences expressed to the family of Greg Gordon.

But you might well have to battle with the surreal elements first.

A tip of the hat to "DP" who sent in the link.

It seems kind of strange to read about a WCG pig farmer.

Back in my day in the WCG, pork was a big no-no. I even wondered why God created the useless creature.

Of course, at the time I didn't know that domesticated swine wasn't created by God (or any other cattle as in Gen. 1:24) and that man created these things for himself from pre-existing wild animals.

It all makes me wonder what the motive for murder was in this case. Was the murderer against Greg Gordona personally or against a pig farmer?

My condolences to the family, absolutely, but several questions are raised by this story.

Was his brother in the church, and thought Farmer Gordon was doing "the devil's work"? Or was Farmer Gordon's membership in the church what led to his brother gunning him down?

Or was the brother just another in a long line of mentally ill church members who were instructed that shrinks are "demon-possessed"? The sister refers to the murderer as "they", does this indicate drug or gang involvement? Or presumed demon possession of the brother?

Either way, that's a hell of a young age to go. :-(

Did anybody else think Cain and Abel?

That last sentence was like a sucker punch.

I am actually going to agree with Corky this time. (I never agree with Corky, and I find his ideology repulsive.) But, it just goes to show how far from doctrine the WCG has strayed.

A search of this website found several more references here, here and here. There are allegations of previous feuding with his family and with whomever was stealing his pigs. The earlier articles give his last name as Gardener.
